Anesthesia Instructions

Before IV Sedation

Intravenous sedation anesthesia provides the patient with a comfortable, relaxing, and anxiety-free surgical experience. To ensure  patient comfort and safety, it is necessary for you to follow some important guidelines:

1. A responsible, adult escort must accompany you to the office who can take you home after surgery. We ask that your escort be present before and after the procedure.

2. Do not eat or drink anything starting midnight the night before prior to your appointment (unless told otherwise by the doctor).

3. If your doctor has provided you with any prescriptions for pre-medication, please take them as directed.

4. Do take your regular daily medications unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.

5. Do not smoke or consume alcoholic beverages for the first 24 hours before surgery.

6. Illnesses, including colds and fevers, require a delay of your surgery in order to ensure safe administration of the anesthetic. If you develop a cold or fever 3-4 days before surgery, please call the office so that necessary arrangements can be made.

7. Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of surgery. We also ask that you remove any nail polish on your fingernails, and do not wear any make-up or jewelry. All mouth piercings have to be removed prior to surgery.

8. We recommend that you have someone at home with you immediately after surgery to attend to your needs.

9. Do not drink alcoholic beverages or drive for 24 hours after surgery. Do not smoke for 2 weeks.

10. If your doctor has instructed you, drink pineapple juice or eat fresh pineapple a couple days before the procedure. Pineapples contain a specific enzyme called Bromelain that may help to reduce inflammation and swelling. It may also help to fade any bruising sooner.
